There is a new cookie stop on the Reston Town Center pavilion, and it is worth a closer look even if vegan cookies are not usually your thing. Midnight Treats has been building a following around the DMV with oversized, made-to-order cookies that are lighter than they look and easy to pair with whatever already brings you to RTC. We tried a few flavors, including double chocolate, classic chocolate chip, marshmallow, and cinnamon roll, and the full post is a useful guide before your next sweet-tooth stop.
For events, I would keep an eye on Lake Fairfax this weekend, where Fairfax County is marking America’s 250th with live music, food trucks, family activities, and a drone show over the lake. Closer in, DOGO Du Togo brings Afropop to Halley Rise on Thursday, while Campfire-Gourmet S’mores Night at Walker Nature Center feels like a good pick for families who want something slower and more local on Friday evening.
Also inside this week, Herndon families are trying to save youth programs at the Neighborhood Resource Center, Weird Brothers Coffee is expanding beyond Herndon, and Fairfax officials are looking more closely at e-bike safety and W&OD Trail crossings. We also have a walkable Reston Station condo spotlight and a full lineup of concerts and events to carry you into July.
Feature Story
NEW SWEET TREAT IN RTC
Midnight Treats is bringing big, made-to-order vegan cookies to the Reston Town Center pavilion, and they are far more craveable than “vegan cookie” might make you expect. With flavors like double chocolate, classic chocolate chip, marshmallow, and cinnamon roll, this is an easy sweet stop before a summer concert, after skating, or anytime RTC calls for an afternoon pick-me-up.
Around Town
WALKABLE RESTON CONDO LIVING

IN OTHER NEWS
Herndon families are pushing to save youth programs at the Neighborhood Resource Center. Cornerstones says its Kids and Parents Engage programs are set to sunset June 30, which has parents, alumni and town leaders scrambling, because “after-school program disappears right as summer starts” is exactly the kind of plot twist nobody ordered.
Reston-based StarKist helped bring a major food distribution event to Herndon. The fifth annual Resource Rally at Floris United Methodist Church packed food and hygiene kits for about 400 families, with Cornerstones, Feed the Children and a small army of volunteers turning the church parking lot into a curbside logistics operation with heart.
Weird Brothers Coffee is expanding beyond Herndon. The Herndon-born coffee roaster is opening its first franchise in Vienna this summer, meaning the local caffeine empire is officially entering its “regional main character” era.
Dogfish Head Alehouse is now targeting an October opening in Reston Town Center. The long-awaited RTC location has slipped from summer to fall, so Reston’s craft-beer crowd will need to keep pretending to be patient a little longer.
Fairfax County may add more stop signs at W&OD Trail crossings. The safety push would target road crossings around the county, which is the kind of very practical update that matters to runners, cyclists, dog walkers and anyone who has ever tried to make eye contact with a driver at a trail crossing.
A Reston space technology company is expanding to Merrifield. It is a nice reminder that somewhere between the patios, trails and grocery-store debates, Reston is also quietly doing actual space stuff.
Fairfax officials are talking e-bike safety. As faster electric bikes become more common on roads and trails, Northern Virginia is trying to get ahead of the chaos before the W&OD starts feeling like the Beltway with pedals.
Fairfax Circuit Court launched a new online learning center focused on civil rights history. It is a surprisingly useful civic rabbit hole, which is not something one says about court websites every day.

EVENTS IN RESTON, HERNDON, AND BEYOND
This week around Reston has a little bit of everything: Afropop at Halley Rise, gourmet s’mores by the campfire at Walker Nature Center, Riverdance at Wolf Trap, and Fairfax County going big for America’s 250th with music, food trucks, and a drone show over Lake Fairfax. The weekend keeps rolling with a harp concert in Reston Town Square Park that stretches from classical to rock, followed by Nature and Nosh at Walker Nature Center for food trucks and pollinator fun. Then Lake Anne closes out the week with big band swing from Radio King Orchestra drifting across the plaza on Wednesday night. Also, don’t miss the full Reston and Herndon summer concert roundup at the top of the newsletter for all the outdoor music happening this week.
