Reston and Herndon’s New Hotspots
Reston Town Center North has been discussed for years, but the latest concept gives a clearer picture of how much this part of Reston could change. The plan covers nearly 48 acres and includes a new library, shelter, recreation center, school, athletic field, central green, housing, retail, and a street network extending the town center northward. It is still a long-term proposal, but the scale and mix of public facilities make it worth a closer look.
For this week’s events, I would start with Campfire Fridays at Lake Fairfax Park, especially for families looking for an easy outdoor evening close to home. The Fairy Festival at Walker Nature Center is another strong pick for younger children, while the virtual Deep Dive into Reston’s lakes offers a thoughtful option for adults who want to better understand how some of the community’s most familiar places are managed.
Elsewhere in the newsletter, Herndon’s restaurant pipeline continues to grow with several new openings and concepts to watch. The local news roundup also covers a new pizza spot at Plaza America, planned changes to the Van Buren Office Park, hydrilla treatment at Lake Thoreau, and a few other developments shaping daily life in Reston and Herndon.

RTC NORTH REDEVELOPMENT EXPLAINED
Reston Town Center North could reshape nearly 48 acres north of the existing town center with new housing, retail, roads, public spaces, and updated community facilities. The long-term plan includes a relocated Reston Regional Library, a larger Embry Rucker Shelter, a recreation center, an athletic field, a future elementary school, and a central green designed to better connect this part of Reston.

HERNDON FOOD OPENINGS TO WATCH
Herndon’s dining scene is adding several new names, from King Kebab and Tona Coffee to Flame Japanese Hibachi, Panda Express, Beignets & Brew, and the recently opened Phonomenal & Bar. Timelines may shift, but locals have plenty of new restaurants and cafés to watch as openings continue across town.

Andy’s Pizza is replacing Mod Pizza at Plaza America. The award-winning D.C.-area pizza shop is moving into the recently vacated space, giving Reston another place to debate whether the perfect slice should fold neatly or require both hands and a backup napkin.
Reston Association is treating Lake Thoreau for hydrilla. The invasive aquatic plant has returned despite the lake’s grass carp apparently doing their best, proving once again that even Reston’s underwater landscaping comes with maintenance meetings.
Herndon approved the redevelopment of Van Buren Office Park. Plans call for replacing five office buildings and their surface parking with 400 apartments, 62 townhouses and commercial space, because the region’s empty-office-to-housing pipeline is officially busier than the Dulles Toll Road at 5 p.m.
An indoor golf simulator is coming to Reston Row. Back Nine Golf plans a 4,500-square-foot location where players can tackle famous courses without humidity, mosquitoes or having to pretend they meant to hit the ball into the next fairway.
Fairfax County apartment rents declined across most local corridors in June. Seven of the county’s eight tracked areas posted year-over-year decreases, which may not qualify as cheap rent, but it is at least a rare Northern Virginia sentence containing the words “rent” and “declined.”
A military veteran has entered the race for Herndon Town Council. Sabrina Bruce says she wants to continue her public service by focusing on the community that welcomed her, joining a local election where traffic, development and town services will likely receive more scrutiny than some federal agencies.
Fairfax County may merge its Tree Commission with another environmental advisory group. The proposal is headed toward an August public hearing as county leaders consider consolidating their green-policy advisers, because even the people speaking for the trees may soon need to share a conference room.
