RESTON INSIDER

This week on…
The Greater Reston Living Podcast
This week’s episode centers on two big local themes: the Reston Association board election, and the larger questions hiding underneath it about costs, growth, and what kind of community Reston wants to remain. We also opened with a few lighter local updates, including Hawkley Brewing’s grand opening in Herndon and the latest on the W&OD rail idea. As local real estate agents, these are exactly the kinds of stories we watch closely because they shape how people think about neighborhoods, convenience, community identity, and where they may want to live next.

Quick hits from the top of the episode
Jimmy’s, Guinness, and the Irish Goodbye Debate
We opened with a St. Patrick’s Day stop at Jimmy’s and somehow ended up in a full debate over what actually counts as an Irish goodbye. It was one of those very normal local nights out that turned into a much bigger conversation than expected.
Hawkley Brewing Opens in Herndon
We also talked about Hawkley Brewing’s grand opening in Herndon at Sunset Park Plaza. It looks like a strong new addition to that part of town, especially with the other nearby spots already making that area more of a destination.
W&OD Rail Idea Hits a Wall
On the local infrastructure front, it looks like the proposal to bring rail back alongside the W&OD Trail has been shut down, at least for now. That is a meaningful update for anyone who followed the idea and wondered whether it had any real momentum.
A 90s Photo Trend Sends Us Digging Through Old Albums
We also took a quick detour into the 90s thanks to that social trend that had everyone pulling out old photos. It turned into a fun little side trip through old albums, old outfits, and a very different era.
Why the Reston Association election matters
The main question we tackled this week was simple: why should anyone care about the Reston Association board election?
On the surface, it sounds like one of those civic items people skip over. But the board touches budgets, amenities, maintenance, planning, and how Reston responds to growth pressure. This year, that conversation is landing at a moment when dues are rising and a lot of residents are asking what they are paying for, what should be protected, and who gets a voice in what comes next.
We also walked through who can vote, when the election ends, and which seats are actually up this year.
Our Question: Are voters just choosing board members, or are they choosing what kind of Reston they want next?
Do you vote in the Reston board elections?
The issues underneath the vote
This election is really about more than candidates.
One issue is cost. The RA budget is up, and dues have gone up with it. For some residents, that makes the election a referendum on maintenance, spending discipline, and whether current amenities are being managed well.
Another is growth. Reston keeps adding more housing and mixed-use development, and that leads to a question we hear all the time: are the new residents and projects contributing fairly to the amenities and systems existing RA members already fund?
Then there is open space and identity. Golf course land, development pressure, and long-term planning all feed into a deeper question about what parts of Reston people want to preserve and what they are willing to see change.
Our Question: As Reston grows and costs rise, what should RA protect first, affordability, amenities, open space, or the character of the community itself?
When you think about Reston right now, what feels most important to protect?
Why we’re watching this
One reason we thought this episode mattered is that these local issues do not stay in neat little policy boxes.
Budgets affect maintenance. Development affects traffic and feel. Open space affects how a place lives day to day. Even if someone is not thinking about moving right now, these are the kinds of shifts that shape how people talk about different parts of Reston over time.

Thinking about a move?
If you are trying to figure out how changes like these affect different neighborhoods in Reston or Herndon, feel free to reply. We spend a lot of time helping people think through not just homes, but also how an area feels, what is changing nearby, and which part of town fits them best.
