Reston and Herndon’s summer soundtrack is back

Summer concert season has arrived in Reston and Herndon, and this week’s lineup makes a strong case for keeping a folding chair in the trunk. Across five nights, the local stages are covering a lot of ground, from jazz at Reston Town Square Park to Friday Night Live in Herndon and emmet swimming at Reston Town Center. We pulled the full guide together so you can see who is playing, where to go, and which nights are worth building around.

Also inside this week: a spring garden guide for Reston and Herndon, a local news roundup with updates on Reston Station, Skyview High School, Dulles, RA signage, Herndon’s Bennett Street proposal and more, plus a full calendar of local events to keep on your radar.

For events, I would start with the Lake Anne Sunset Paddle if you want something quieter and a little different, especially with the long weekend feeling close. NextStop’s Once is also a strong pick if you want an indoor night out, and Saturday’s stargazing at Udvar-Hazy is the kind of nearby event that works well for families, aviation fans, and anyone who likes a good excuse to look up for a while.

IN OTHER NEWS

  • The Back Nine Golf is teeing up a Reston Station location after signing a 4,500-square-foot lease at 1860 Reston Row Plaza. It promises 24/7 simulator access, which feels very Reston: golf without weather, grass, or the need to explain why you own three quarter-zips.

  • Skyview High School got the green light to start using the former King Abdullah Academy campus near Herndon and Udvar-Hazy. FCPS expects about 1,000 ninth- and tenth-graders in year one, which should help take pressure off crowded schools in Herndon, Chantilly, Centreville and Oakton.

  • Dulles landed a $41.8 million federal grant for Concourse E construction. The first phase is expected to add 14 United gates, a direct AeroTrain connection and actual new-airport energy, which is rare for a place where many of us still measure time in “how long until the people mover door closes?

  • Reston Association is updating pesticide warning signs after a resident raised concerns about tiny, hard-to-spot notices near Hook Road Recreation Area. Larger signs, clearer timing and QR-code links are reportedly coming, because nothing says Reston civic life like turning lawn treatment into a transparency initiative.

  • Comstock says Reston and Herndon were never casino contenders, despite recent rumor churn around Silver Line casino talk. The developer says Tysons has always been the focus, which means Restonites can go back to worrying about more traditional local hazards, like parking, density and whether that restaurant is actually open yet.

  • Herndon is considering a Bennett Street road diet near Herndon High School. The proposal would remove lanes, add pedestrian refuges and slow drivers down, which sounds boring until you remember this is the exact stretch where school traffic turns everyone into a traffic engineer.

  • Herndon 2050 is asking locals to help shape the town’s future, from parks and trails to redevelopment, transportation and public spaces. In other words, the town is crowdsourcing the next 20 years, so now is the time to put “more walkable, less weird left turns” into the official record.

  • Fairfax supervisors are studying property tax rebates for years when the county has a significant surplus. It is still early, but the board unanimously asked staff to look at the mechanics, which is the most Fairfax County way possible to say, “maybe someday you get money back, but first we need a report.”

EVENTS IN RESTON, HERNDON, AND BEYOND

This week has a little bit of everything for locals who like to actually leave the house: sunset paddling on Lake Anne, a Tony-winning musical at NextStop, jazz in Reston Town Square Park, Friday Night Live kicking off in Herndon, emmet swimming at Reston Town Center, stargazing with the Smithsonian out at Udvar-Hazy, and a midweek movie morning back at RTC. It’s one of those weeks where Reston and Herndon feel like summer is officially clocking in: boats on the lake, music on the greens, telescopes pointed skyward, and just enough indoor culture to keep things interesting if the weather gets weird.
