Herndon puts affordable housing closer to the center of future development. The Town Council voted 6-0 to direct staff and a consultant to create interim guidance that would prioritize residential and mixed-use proposals with affordable units, while Herndon works on a longer-term housing policy as part of its 2050 comprehensive plan update.

The county’s new Tenant Support Services initiative is aimed at getting eligible small-business renovations through zoning and permit review faster, with one point of contact and a target building-permit turnaround of three to five business days for complete submissions.
Apartment rents are still easing in Reston, Herndon, and Tysons. Fairfax County’s median apartment rent in March was $2,359, down 2.3% from a year earlier, with Apartment List data showing Reston down 0.7%, Herndon down 2.3%, and Tysons down 3% year over year.
Tysons developers are focusing more on upgrades than brand-new towers. At the Vision Tysons summit in mid-March, the conversation shifted toward improving and activating existing developments, even as some new residential projects continue rising near Metro.
Herndon quietly ended its ‘streetery’ outdoor dining program. Town officials let the pilot expire after just one restaurant participated over two years, with setup costs, winter storage, and the limited size of the dining areas all cited as hurdles.
RCC is marking 25 years of the Reston Multicultural Festival. Reston Community Center announced that applications are open for performers, artisans, and community groups as it prepares for the festival’s 25th year — a nice reminder that one of Reston’s signature community traditions is hitting a milestone in 2026.
Reston’s Arbor Day push highlighted just how much green space the community still protects. In promoting its late-March volunteer cleanup and planting effort, Reston Association noted that Reston has more than 700 acres of forest and has been recognized as a Tree City USA community since 1994.

EVENTS IN RESTON, HERNDON, AND BEYOND
This stretch of the week has a very peak-Reston-and-Herndon vibe: kids racing across Bready Park for Herndon’s Hoppy Egg Hunting, neighbors easing into Saturday with coffee and conversation at RCC Hunters Woods, and then Lake Anne doing what Lake Anne does best with Celebrate Reston! on Sunday. If you want the calmer version of the weekend, there’s an early bird walk at Bright Pond and the Celebrate Reston at Lake Anne exhibit running throughout the week. And to top it off, Thursday brings a little polish with Darden Purcell and the Mason Jazz Vocalists, which feels like a classy way to close out a week that starts with bunny photos and ends with jazz standards.
